Meet Emma, Personal Support Worker
Emma is a personal support worker in our Supported Living Service. Hear what she has to say about her career with us:
My day to day role changes everyday - no day is the same! It all depends on what the people I support have got planned and would like to do. This can range from appointments, trips out, and shopping to even supporting them on holidays. I make sure that everything I do throughout the day is centred on the person I am supporting in their daily living. This includes hygiene, medication, attending appointments, giving options of where they would like to go, preparing fresh meals, cleaning, the list goes on…
I enjoy it when individuals meet their own goals and wishes, and watching them live how they wish to. Making a difference to their day by supporting them is a very rewarding job, there’s a reason most people call carers ‘Unsung Heroes’.
I, like in many other of our services, work in a strong team who are all so different, and I enjoy being around them on shift.
I briefly left Diverse Abilities, but I returned when the job I left to do because too routine. I knew life here wouldn’t be the same each day of the week - the company has so many service; schools, day centres, respite, there’s something for everyone. I have not met a person here I dislike, and have made a good bunch of friends and colleagues along the way, who will be stuck with me!
My advice to anyone starting a career in care is to enjoy every moment. Care is very rewarding and you get a lot of satisfaction in your job role. I hardly ever have a bad day at work, and I would personally find it difficult not to be working with people. I’m happy in my job and the people I work for and with.
Many people say “I couldn’t do your job”, but they are already doing it only without support and guidance from a fantastic bunch of people along the way.
