Taking on a challenge for Diverse Abilities

A woman from Bournemouth has taken on the challenge of losing 30 pounds in three months to raise £300 for Dorset’s disability charity, Diverse Abilities.

Cherie Mepham, 32, is giving up chocolate, cheese, sweets and takeaways as part of her challenge to lose weight and fundraise during lockdown.

Cherie said: “I wanted to challenge myself with something that I knew would be difficult, but that I wouldn’t be restricted with in lockdown, and I decided on a weight loss challenge. Dieting is not something I’m good at, and due to various health issues I can find it hard to exercise, but what better way to motivate myself to part with the chocolates than doing it for a lovely charity like Diverse Abilities.”

Diverse Abilities supports children and adults with profound and multiple physical and learning disabilities. Cherie’s sister, Rochelle, has been supported by the charity her whole life, from attending its specialist school in Poole, Langside, to its day activity and therapy centre The Beehive, where she currently enjoys taking part in various activities and making friends.

Cherie added: “I’m also really looking forward to taking on the Dorset Neon Run on 22nd May – I’ve never been much of a runner but I’ve really been enjoying getting active as part of the process and it’s a great goal to keep me motivated through the challenge.”

The £300 Cherie aims to raise can provide a night of 1:1 care and support at home for a child with profound and multiple physical and learning disabilities, giving parents and carers rest, space, and peace of mind.

Emma Bovey, fundraising manager at Diverse Abilities, said: “We’re cheering Cherie on throughout the challenge and can’t wait for her to cross her finish line! Not only is she losing weight and getting fit, but she’s also supporting our excellent cause.”
