Meet Charlotte, Short Breaks Assistant

Meet Charlotte, Short Breaks Assistant in the children’s team. Hear what she has to say about her career with us:

I joined Diverse Abilities when I was 18, alongside working as a level 3 teaching assistant at Yewstock Special Needs School.

My biggest challenge was learning to adapt from being crew to supervisor, realising I was now the one in charge, but everyone was super supportive and eventually I just fell into the role like it was second nature.

One of my favourite memories is a Project session where I just let the kids go wild but we all had the best time playing in trays of icing and sprinkles, coloured water and ice, and having leaf fights. A great sensory experience.

My advice for new starters would be to just have fun, become a child again, and enjoy every minute because when you’re enjoying yourself so are the children and adults you are working with. Also, lean on your team as they will become like family.
