Disability advice appointments for the deaf community

Ensuring excellent communication is never compromised

The length of time from completing a benefit application to appeal can be 12 to 18 months depending on the type of benefit, which can be extremely stressful in itself, and more so if communication is difficult.

That’s why we’ve been working hard to secure funding to provide us with the capacity to include a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter for our advice appointments free of charge.

Benefits appointments with a BSL interpreter include:

  • Carers Allowance (CA)

  • Blue Badge and Limited Capability for Work assessment forms

  • Discretionary Housing Payment applications

  • Child disability living allowance (DLA)

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

  • Attendance Allowance (AA)

We also support deaf parents to access support for their disabled child/children who may not have a hearing impairment. Appointments can be over Zoom or in person.

A man on a video call using a laptop

“After several failed applications, Diverse Abilities

helped me to complete the DLA application for

my eldest daughter and it was successful.

My other daughter also had a DLA application,

Diverse Abilities assisted with this, and it was

successful on the first application. The team has

assisted me and provided me with the BSL

communication support that I needed. I could

not have done it without their help.”
