Transitions & Lawford Lodge

We provide support so young people aged 18 - 25 making the transition into adulthood are ready for the future and the move towards Adult Services, whether that’s with us or with another provider.

Providing support

Full support can be provided for all care needs, and all of our staff are highly trained and experienced in a variety of care techniques. Staff work closely with social workers and health care professionals to ensure all needs are met, as well as support to access the local community. Bespoke timetables based on each individual’s needs are created to include physiotherapy, life skills, sensory activities, social interactions, and much more, our support workers want to help everyone to live their lives as independently as possible. Lawford Lodge

Lawford Lodge is a respite home for 18 to 25-year olds who have profound disabilities and complex medical needs.

It is a two-bedroom bungalow with a lounge area, kitchen, accessible bathroom and a large garden. There are hoisting facilities throughout the home.

Adults with complex medical needs can come for breaks, which can vary in length dependent on assessed need, for example, one night per month or two nights per week. We can then work with the young person and their parent or carer to support transition fully to an adult service before they are 25.

The history of Lawford Lodge

Lawford Lodge is named after Marion Lawford, mother to Sue who has been supported by Diverse Abilities for more than 50 years.

Marion started volunteering at Langside School in 1963, when Sue first became a pupil. She sat on many committees, became Hon. Treasurer, later Company Secretary, and then became Executive Officer in the 1970s.

She was instrumental in the growth of the charity including the opening of Edward House, the residential home run by the charity; oversaw needed extensions to both Langside and Edward House; and started the project of our children’s respite home Smithers, now Lily’s Place.

She fundraised to purchase the property and secured the support of local authorities to place and provide funding for children who required this vital new service.
