Shownotes - Episode Eight

Care is a Career for Everyone with Jack - E8

There are so many potential stars in the care industry whose only barrier is realising it’s a place for everyone to shine!

Men make up such a small percentage of caregivers in the UK, one of whom is a local favourite in our on-call team at Diverse Abilities, and has been with us for

nearly five years now. With International Men’s Day around the corner, it’s a perfect time to explore his journey into care, and what we can do to encourage more male carers in to the profession!

This episode covers:

  • The qualities of a great male carer

  • Life in the on-call team

  • What we can do to encourage more male carers into the profession

  • Unique qualities that men can bring to a caregiving team

Our highlights from this episode…

“Quite often, some of the blokes that we support love having just a bit of bloke time, people talking to them like you’d normally do down the pub.” - 2:45 - Jack“

“When you’re on-call, people come to you with questions, and you just have to figure out solutions. Sometimes you get a few hours to figure out a problem,

sometimes you get a few seconds.” - 7:10 - Jack

“Care and nursing is considered female-dominated, but men need to be told that this is an option for work. At school, it was never mentioned to me - if I was

exposed sooner, I might’ve got into it sooner.” - 11:20 - Jack

“There is a lot to say about picking staff for the right activities. Sometimes it's not always possible, and sometimes it's a very lucid dream, but there are times you

can make things work out much better with more appropriate staff, male or female, because it doesn't really matter at the end of the day, as long as they're

getting the support.” - 14:25 - Jack
