Gifts in wills

Leaving a gift in your will is a great way to help your legacy live on and helps to provide a better future for disabled adults and children, and their families.

By leaving a gift in your will you are creating an everlasting memory and helping the charity to live on too. Supporting Diverse Abilities means you are helping hundreds of disabled adults, children, and their families, to not only have a better quality of life, but also to potentially live longer.

As for people we support are living longer and their needs are becoming more complex, the demand for our services is constantly increasing. Your donation will help to ensure we can be there for disabled people now and in the future.

Not only does leaving a gift to charity help to ensure that our services can continue, but it can also have tax benefits too, meaning you could pay less tax. Speak to your solicitor for more information.

Our promise to you

We promise that we will use your money wisely and that it will make a genuine difference to the people we support. We want you to feel completely comfortable about doing so and have developed our legacy promise.

If you are considering leaving money in your will to Diverse Abilities, we understand what an important decision it is, that is why we make this promise to you:

  • We understand and respect that your family and loved ones will always come first.

  • Leaving a gift in your will is a personal and very big decision; we respect the fact that it is your decision and will never put pressure on you to do so.

  • If you have chosen to leave a gift to us in your will, we would love to hear about it so we can thank you; however, we understand if you would prefer not to tell us.

  • We will use your gift carefully and cost effectively, so it has the greatest impact on people we support. Any gift, irrespective of size, will help people with disabilities and you will never be asked to leave more money.

  • We will handle whatever gift you leave to us efficiently, with care, sensitivity, and respect.

A donation in your will makes a huge difference

We received a donation from a lady whose son we supported to live independently in one of our Supported Living bungalows for more than 20 years. He also visited our day care centre, The Beehive Centre. Because she saw how much her son thrived, and how his life improved by having his own home, she wanted to give others the same opportunity.

The donation enabled us to refurbish two bungalows and make them fully accessible to provide new homes for four adults with disabilities who use wheelchairs and were in unsuitable housing previously or living with their families.

Refurbishments included new accessible kitchens and bathrooms as well as specially designed layouts, widened doorways, garden access and decorating throughout. Both properties are now completely transformed, as are the lives of those who have moved in. They are now living in homes they are proud of, with our round the clock support team assisting them.

Another supporter, Sadie Smith, the mother of a child who attends Langside School, supported Diverse Abilities through a legacy:

“We have chosen to support Diverse Abilities through a legacy as they are a charity very close to our hearts, our son has been cared for at their children’s Short Break Centre and amazing school for 16 years. There are other charities which claim to support profoundly disabled children and adults in Dorset, but it’s Diverse Abilities who deliver what they promise.”

“Our son is transitioning from their child services into adult services and because we know he will have the best care from them, it’s one less thing to worry about. It is due to their care, support, and expert knowledge that our son has thrived and surpassed all our hopes and wishes for him.”

“Simply put, when our son was born all we could hope for him was survival but Diverse Abilities has given him a quality of life, which the charity will continue to provide for the rest of his life, and that’s the best reason ever to support such an amazing charity.”
