Short Breaks Crew - Weymouth

Pay Rate:

£6.40 per hour (age 16-17), £8.60 per hour (age 18-20), £11.44 (age 21+)

Overall purpose:

To support more complex children and young people with additional emotional needs and disabilities and their siblings in their play at a variety of activities at Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre.

To ensure positive outcomes and the continual safety, health, and wellbeing of the children and young people using Children’s Services.


This role requires staff to

  • Take responsibility for a child for the session, whilst team working for the care and oversight of others.

  • Follow each individual child or young person’s care plan and contribute to their continuing development.

  • Assist where necessary any child or young person with eating and drinking, or maintaining their nutritional needs.

  • Support children and young people to fulfil their social and emotional needs through play/activities.

  • Always encourage acceptable social behaviour from all children.

  • Follow guidance of other professionals in providing learning opportunities; follow any schemes/programmes suggested by therapists etc.

  • Be innovative in suggesting opportunities for activities, play and learning.

  • Accompany children and young people on outings and trips.

  • Encourage self-advocacy whenever possible and help the children and young people in their attempts to communicate their wishes and desires.

  • Where children and young people are unable to articulate for themselves, be prepared to speak up for them, promoting the child or young person’s known views and preferences.

  • Discuss and report any concerns about the children or young people with senior staff.

  • Adhere to the highest standards of Safeguarding Procedures including completing body map forms as required and passing to the supervisor of the session.

  • Attend and take part in staff meetings and discussions. Play an active role as part of the staff team.

  • Attend all mandatory training courses and be responsible for own learning and personal development.

  • Support more complex children and young people with additional emotional needs and disabilities to help fulfil their social needs through play/activities on a 1:1 basis.

  • Play an active role as part of the staff team and act as a role model for younger staff.

  • Report back to parents about the child/young person’s experience of the activity.

  • Discuss and report any concerns about the children or young people with senior staff and by being aware of the organisation’s policies and procedures and attending appropriate training courses.

  • Maintain the facilities at Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre in a healthy, safe, clean, and tidy state by reporting any defects or damage in equipment to the senior staff.

  • Replace games and toys after each activity, removing any broken items from general circulation.

  • Implement and work to all policies and procedures, which are available to read at the CHAOS Families Centre office.
